Short-term insurance

Short-term insurance covers things you can lose, damage or be held responsible for. For a family that is usually the car, the home and the contents. For a business it is property, liability, stock and vehicles. The schedule and the wording decide what is paid, not the brochure.

A policy is a contract

We read three things with you before cover is bound: what is insured, for how much, and what is excluded. The excess, the security conditions and the average clause are where claims disappoint people. We would rather talk about them on a quiet afternoon.

If the insured amount is below the cost of replacing the car or rebuilding the house, a claim may not be paid in full. Many policies work that way. Ask us to check the sums.

Personal and commercial are different conversations

A household policy and a business policy should not be forced into one another. If you run a business from home, or a bakkie does both school runs and site work, say so. The wrong class of use is a common reason a claim is disputed.

Questions we hear

What does personal short-term insurance usually include?

Often the car, the building, the contents, and sometimes specified items such as laptops or jewellery. Each section has its own sum insured and its own excess. See the personal page for how we approach a household.

Do transport companies need different cover?

Usually yes. A fleet, goods in transit and liability for other people’s goods are not the same as a family car. We talk about what you move, where, and what a bad day would cost.

Should I choose on premium alone?

No. Premium, excess, insured value and exclusions belong in the same conversation. We do not lead with price, and we will not knock an insurer to win a quote.
